Overview

Welcome to Module 1 of the Integrative Lifestyle Medicine (ILM) Certificate by Dr. Ginger. Garner. Module 1 will explore chronic disease and pain.

Chronic disease and pain are now epidemic public health problems in the United States. Rapidly evolving technology is allowing us to diagnose disease in an unprecedented way, but our current high-tech system has for too long targeted sickcare, rather than healthcare.

Physical therapists and similar professions are ideally suited to address chronic pain and disease through an Integrative Lifestyle Medicine approach. We have more time with patients and see them for longer, which enables us to develop the necessary trust relationship required to improve patient self-efficacy and confidence.

Learning Objectives

In Module 1 of the ILM Certificate, you will:

  1. Learn how to screen for the vital signs of Lifestyle Medicine.
  2. List the diagnostic labs necessary for systems-based screening in Functional Medicine. Describe how to operationalize the biopsychosocial assessment and intervention in a concrete, evidence-based model.
  3. Identify the precepts for safe mind-body practice through the lens of medical therapeutic yoga.
  4. Learn how to use psychologically informed methods of care.
  5. Discuss the models for influencing behavior change.
  6. Learn the evidence-base that supports Chronic Care Models.
  7. Use yoga as an Integrative Lifestyle Medicine intervention.
