Yoga when Pain Persists is a new two-part online course by Neil Pearson - part 1 is a practical lecture and part 2 is an interactive lecture.
Part 1: Practical
Knowledge can be the foundation for change, especially when we are confronted with a difficult challenge like persisting pain that doesn’t follow previous understood rules.
Our beliefs about pain, about people in pain and pain management can all be barriers impacting recovery.
‘Explaining pain’ through verbal, written and video processes can become powerful skillset of yoga therapists, yet could the experiential learning of yoga be even more powerful?
This session begins with a brief introductory lecture on pain education research then switches to guidance through educational yoga experiences exploring the power of embodied and kinaesthetic experiences for people living in pain.
Part 2: Interactive
Benefits emerge through the practice of yoga, yet yoga therapy allows us to adapt individual aspects and techniques to best suit individual needs.
When pain persists, individuals experience unique patterns of disrupted awareness and difficulties with self-regulation.
These changes to body, breath, thoughts and emotions are linked to both autonomic and central nervous system ‘plasticity’.
This new course for physiotherapists, healthcare professionals, and yoga therapists will explore awareness and self-regulation from perspectives of the lived experience of pain and yoga therapy, considering scientific and therapeutic findings, and highlighting individual differences in separating and combining awareness and self-regulation techniques of yoga.

Neil is the founder and director of Neil Pearson Physiotherapist Corporation, which operates as life is now. He focuses on providing the knowledge and tools for effective pain self-management, through two avenues: Pain Care Education, and Pain Care Yoga.
Neil works as a registered physiotherapist, and a certified yoga therapist in Penticton, BC, Canada. He is an educator: Clinical Assistant Professor at University of British Columbia, faculty with the BC Medical Association enhancing knowledge and clinical practice of primary care MDs, and a faculty member in five yoga therapist training programs. Near home, he is active in providing, and researching the effectiveness of group pain education within both primary and secondary pain care. Neil is the founding Chair of the Pain Science Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, and the first PT recipient of the Canadian Pain Society’s top honour for Excellence in Interprofessional Pain Education.
