Overview

A patient walks in a few days after a rear-end collision with neck pain, a headache, and plenty of questions about what comes next. What you say and do in those early visits can shape how their recovery unfolds.

In this online course, osteopath and pain management educator Alison Sim walks you through how the major whiplash guidelines were developed, what they recommend, and how to put them into practice.

You'll review Quebec Task Force classification, the Canadian C-Spine Rule, prognostic indicators, and the evidence behind common treatments from the MINT and PROMISE trials and the OPTIMa Collaboration reviews.

The course also explores why some patients develop persistent symptoms, including the roles of trauma, anxiety, and central sensitization.


Learning Objectives

In this online course, we will:

  1. Classify whiplash-associated disorder using the Quebec Task Force grades (0 to IV) and recognize its common clinical presentations
  2. Apply the Canadian C-Spine Rule to decide when plain radiography is indicated
  3. Differentiate first-line guideline recommendations from treatments that are not routinely recommended or are recommended against
  4. Identify the factors with strong evidence for poor prognosis, as well as those that do not predict outcome
  5. Explain how central sensitization and trigeminocervical convergence can contribute to persistent symptoms after whiplash
  6. Use outcome measures such as the VAS, NDI, and IES-R to guide reassessment at key time points


Audience

This course is designed for physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists, and other practitioners who manage patients after motor vehicle collisions. It's especially relevant if you work in manual therapy or see patients through auto insurance or injury claims. Clinicians in primary care and emergency settings will also find the imaging and early management content useful.

Why This Course Matters

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries after a motor vehicle collision, yet the research highlighted in this course suggests full recovery rates have not meaningfully improved over the years. Roughly half of people recover within three months, while many others live with pain and disability for years. Part of the challenge may sit with us: practitioners who aren't familiar with the guidelines can set unhelpful expectations, lean on passive treatments, or inadvertently encourage passive coping. The evidence reviewed here also shows that more care isn't always better care, with high-intensity treatment linked to poorer outcomes.

The good news is that learning the guidelines has been shown to improve how closely clinicians follow them, and manual therapists are well placed to lead an active, guideline-based approach.

The instructors
Alison Sim

Alison has a keen interest in educating health professionals about the latest science surrounding pain, especially pain that hangs around- chronic or persisting pain.

Dr. Alison Sim trained as an osteopath in Australia and has completed a Masters degree in pain management. She has been speaking on the topic of pain science and the integration of this knowledge into clinical practice for several years. She is a firm believer that a good understanding of integrated pain science knowledge is powerful for both clinicians and patients, and that manual therapists are among the best placed practitioners to be implementing such approaches in the healthcare setting. She works in private practice in a chronic pain setting in Melbourne, Australia.

She has completed Masters of science in Medicine in Pain Management through the Sydney University Medical School and Royal North Shore Pain Management Research Institute. She has lectured at Australian Catholic University, Victoria University, and RMIT in a variety of science and clinical subject. She has also worked as part of the teaching team at Deakin University Medical School.
