Oncology yoga is considered a complementary therapy that makes a positive impact on those undergoing cancer treatments. The research now has evidence to demonstrate the benefits of this method.


In this session, recorded at the 2024 Montreal International Symposium on Therapeutic Yoga (MISTY), guided by Laura Hernandez and Tari Prinster (founder of Yoga4cancer), you will gain a better understanding of the reasons why oncology yoga exists and much more!

Some of the reasons for yoga oncology include: 


  • The population of people diagnosed with cancer is large and growing.
  • Managing the side effects of cancer is vital, and
  • The need for an active yoga practice is recommended.



Learning Objectives

In this online course, you will learn how to:

  1. Thrive as a teacher and the importance of specialization of teachers
  2. Build strength and flexibility.
  3. Strengthen the immune system and improve lymphatic function.

  4. Reduce cancer-related fatigue.
  5. Improve sleep and reduce anxiety.

  6. Increase bone density.

  7. Maintain a healthy body weight.

  8. Help manage side effects like lymphedema, constipation and neuropathy.

  9. Improve a sense of well-being and confidence.

  10. Encourage survivors to participate in their wellness plan & is innately trauma-informed.


We will also experience a short oncology yoga practice.

 

Presenters Bios


Laura Hernandez, RYT500, Oncology Yoga, Movement Therapist

Laura Hernandez, RYT500, Oncology Yoga, Movement Therapist

Founder and owner of Yoga & Movement, Laura is a facilitator and visionary who is passionate about convening and creating networks. She advocates for oncology yoga as a trauma-informed specialization; she supports integrative oncology and its ethics as well as safety practices in teaching this approach.

Laura is Certified in "Oncology Yoga" as a teacher and teacher trainer for Yoga4Cancer http://www.yoga4cancer.com. She completed the Yoga Thrive program hosted by The Yoga Effect in partnership with the Wellness Lab at the University of Calgary and pursues continuing education in Oncology Yoga with Radika Foundation, Spain.

Laura is a Member of the International Network of Oncology Yoga (Spanish-speaking countries). She also pursues continuing education in Spiritual sciences and end-of-life training and holds an accreditation from the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation (QBCF), for which she is a senior teacher and teacher trainer www.yogaetmouvement.com.

Tari Prinster is a cancer survivor, master yoga teacher, celebrated author and founder of Yoga4cancer and the Yoga4cancer Foundation (501c3), which brings evidence-informed Oncology Yoga to cancer survivors worldwide.

Tari’s organization has trained over 3,000 professionals worldwide and supports research to assess the contributions of yoga. Yoga4cancer advocates for Oncology Yoga in both private and public sectors and organizations. Tari and her global community have seen the benefits to recovery that Oncology Yoga provides —before, during and after treatment.

Her book, Yoga for Cancer: A Guide to Managing Side Effects, Boosting Immunity, and Improving Recovery for Cancer Survivors, is an illustrated guide for cancer survivors available in English, Spanish and Japanese. https://yoga4cancer.com

Helene Couvrette
Co-Founder, President of MISTY

Her passion for yoga inspired her to share yoga with a few friends in the basement of one of whom eventually lost her battle with cancer. She soon realized her love of yoga could only be surpassed by the desire to share it with others & the joy of seeing them benefit from yoga on many levels.

In 2002 just after delivering a stillborn boy Helene embarked on a 200hr YTT Certification Course. During 2003 she continued the training at same time began teaching yoga at the St. Lazare Community Center. Helene continues to teach regular yoga classes with a therapeutic approach, offers Private Yoga Therapy Sessions & mentors a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training. Winter of 2018 she will introduce an Advanced Yoga Teacher Training focusing on Therapeutics.

Helene is also co-founder of this international conference bringing health care professionals & yoga therapist together with the mission of integrating yoga into the Canadian health care system.
