Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Grand Rounds 16

Case: 

This month’s case involves a 38-year-old male struggling to recover from a workplace low back injury almost a decade ago and continues to experience persistent pain as a result. His journey is further complicated by mental health and substance use disorders.

Case Presenter: Will Bateman

William Bateman assisted in designing and implementing Steps Services, an interdisciplinary primary care team of allied health clinicians serving vulnerable and marginalized clients with persistent pain, mental health and substance use concerns in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. His experience on this team has highlighted the complex interplay between mental and physical health, and allowed him to explore the role PTs play in supporting clients' mental health concerns. Prior to his time at Vancouver Coastal Heath he ran a small clinic in Squamish treating persistent pain in rock climbers. He currently sits on the CPA Pain Science Division executive committee and is a UBC Clinical Educator.

Panelist:  Neil Pearson, PT, MSc(RHBS), BA-BPHE, C-IAYT, ERYT500 

Neil is a physical therapist, yoga therapist, researcher, Clinical Associate Professor at UBC, and faculty in three IAYT-accredited yoga therapy programs. He is the founding chair of CPA’s Pain Science Division, and the recipient of awards honouring his work in pain care, patient education and physiotherapy by Queen’s University, the Canadian Pain Society, and Physiotherapy Associations of BC and Canada, including the Canadian 2021 Medal of Distinction.  He co-authored – Yoga and Science in Pain Care 2019, authored Understand Pain Live Well Again in 2008, and is lead contributor to many free patient resources offer by Pain BC.

Panelist: Dave Walton PT, PhD 

Dave is an Associate Professor with the School of Physical Therapy (cross Dept. of Psychiatry) at the University of Western Ontario. He is a clinical researcher with interests in clinical measurement, recovery prognosis, trauma-informed care, and knowledge mobilization. He is Co-Director, Innovative Solutions with Western's CANSpine clinical research laboratory and publishes widely in the fields of pain and spinal trauma rehabilitation.

Panelist: Dominique Gilbert M.Sc., pht  physiothérapeute

Ms Dominique Gilbert has been working as a physiotherapist for more almost 40 years. She obtained a post-graduate diploma in Insurance Medicine and Forensics from the University of Montreal in 2009. Following her graduation, she became a member of the Quebec Society of Forensic Experts (SEEMLQ) in 2013, as well as a member of the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators in 2014. She is a clinical specialist in Pain Science and in 2015 obtained her Masters in Biomedical Science from the University of Montreal. She is currently the chair of the Pain Science Division.
