Topic: Introduction to Individualized Perscription of Ankle-Foot Orthoses for Children with Cerebral Palsy

Speakers: Dr. Kyra Kane

Session Description: Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are frequently prescribed to address walking impairments in children with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy (CP). Determining the best orthotic design for each individual child presents an important clinical challenge. This session will overview the biomechanical mechanisms of AFO intervention for this population, and evidence-informed clinical recommendations designed to improve individualized AFO prescription outcomes.

Speaker Bio:

Kyra Kane, BScPT, MSc, PHd is a senior physical therapist in the Children's Program at Wascana Rehabiliation Centre in Regina. Her clinical and research interests focus on evidence-informed, individualized prescription and tuning of AFO-footwear combinations to improve gait and mobility outcomes for children and youth with cerebral palsy. As well, Kyra sits on the Canadian Physiotherapy Association's Knowledge Translation Committee and the Paediatric Division executive.

Description de la séance: Les orthèses cheville/pied sont couramment prescrites pour traiter la mobilité réduite chez les enfants avec des troubles neurologiques comme la paralysie cérébrale (PC). Déterminer la meilleure conception d’orthèse pour chaque enfant représente un défi clinique majeur. Cette séance donnera un aperçu des mécanismes biomécaniques de l’intervention des orthèses cheville/pied pour cette population et des recommandations cliniques éclairées par des données probantes ayant pour but d’améliorer la prescription d’orthèses cheville/pied individualisée et les résultats.

The instructors
Dr. Kyra Kane (she/her)
BScPT, MSc, PhD

Dr. Kyra Kane has been a registered physical therapist since 1997, with clinical experience in pediatrics and orthopaedics. She is also an adjunct professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science and an associate member in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Saskatchewan. Kyra has an MSc in Kinesiology and Health Studies, a PhD in Health Sciences, and extensive postgraduate training and clinical experience in biomechanical gait analysis and orthotic intervention.

Kyra is passionate about supporting the clinical application of evidence and best practices. She has presented her research nationally and internationally through journals, conferences, lectures, and webinars. Her research interests include examining evidence-based use of individualized ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) for children, improving pediatric gait measurement, understanding the experiences of children and clinicians with AFO prescription, and improving pediatric rehabilitation outcomes.
