Background:

Physiotherapy occupies a very unique space in the continuum of healthcare. We are often afforded both the time and space to develop meaningful connections with the people to whom we offer care.  Evidence supports that the alliance that is formed between a patient and therapist can directly impact outcomes, hence PTs must be skilled in both instrumental and interpersonal skills. The Physiotherapy essential competencies include both Communication and Collaboration as minimal skills, knowledge, and attitudes that all physiotherapists should be able to demonstrate. Communication, the exchange and understanding of information, both verbal and non-verbal is a conduit by which we connect with each other, this then paves the way for potential Collaboration. True Collaboration, working together towards a shared goal, is difficult when Connection has not occurred. The power of intimate contact combined with the power of authentic Connection is the essence of PT practice.

Webinar Objectives:

  1. Discuss evidence as it pertains to the therapeutic alliance and patient outcome
  2. Describe the CARE model as a clinical framework to scaffold interactions
  3. List strategies that can be used to enhance the forming of a connection
  4. Reflect on how these competencies can be applied in a clinical encounter and how the clinician’s own personal values, biases, experiences, and beliefs will shape those encounters
