Introduction

This session will present the latest scientific evidence on how running shoes affect biomechanics, injuries and performance. This will help physiotherapists make informed recommendations to clients seeking treatment for a running injury, or advice on injury prevention.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate between different categories of running shoes (minimalist, maximalist, motion control, etc.).
  • Understand how different types of footwear can affect forces applied to the lower limbs.
  • Understand the effects of footwear on running performance.
  • Apply these concepts to case examples of injured runners.

 

Speaker's Biography:

Jean-Francois Esculier

Dr. Jean-Francois Esculier (JF) is a physiotherapist and clinician-researcher who completed a Masters, PhD and postdoctoral fellowship about running injuries and knee pain (patellofemoral pain, osteoarthritis). His research work focuses on optimizing care for injured runners, understanding how running footwear and gait modifications affects biomechanics and pain, as well as disseminating research knowledge to healthcare professionals and the general public.

He leads the Research & Development has been lecturing internationally with The Running Clinic since 2011. Dr. Esculier has a caseload including mainly injured runners at the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Clinic in Vancouver.
