Examination of the Cervical Region for Vascular Pathologies
Examination of the Cervical Region for Vascular Pathologies
This course includes
Description:
This online course will provide an overview of the international framework for the examination of the cervical region for potential vascular pathologies. This framework should be used to examine the neck prior to Orthopaedic Manual Therapy (OMT) Intervention. This framework was updated in 2020 and unanimously accepted by IFOMPT countries.
Objectives:
- To discuss the purpose of the cervical framework, highlighting the changes in the 2020 version
- To explore the basis of clinical reasoning and shared decision-making; underpinning the cervical framework to inform safe and effective practice
- To critically analyze the key issues for the patient history and the physical examination in the examination of a patient presenting with head and / or neck pain that may be a symptom of an underlying vascular pathology or dysfunction
- To discuss the assessment of risk versus benefit to inform intervention
Speaker Bios:
Lisa Carlesso
Lisa Carlesso is an Assistant Professor and physiotherapist in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University. She worked clinically for 25 years, obtaining FCAMPT status. Her graduate work focused on issues related to manual therapy, adverse events, consent and the collection of physiotherapy specific data in this regard. With this expertise, she contributed to a panel discussion at the IFOMPT conference in Rotterdam in 2008 and subsequently lead an international survey on the topic of manipulative practice for IFOMPT member countries. She was a contributor to the first IFOMPT cervical framework in 2012 and for the recent update lead the shared decision-making, informed consent and medico-legal framework section. Her research is broadly focused on optimizing outcomes for people with chronic musculoskeletal disorders by 1. Understanding the complex mechanisms of acute and persistent pain through pain phenotyping, 2. Improving prognosis and treatment of chronic musculoskeletal disorders and 3. Knowledge translation of evidence to improve clinical practice. This includes evaluating strategies to improve entry-level pain education for physiotherapists.
