Yoga and Science in Pain Care Chapter 1: The Lived Experience of Pain
This is how I started my chapter, and how I will ground this session. I will explore this life- and self-altering aspect of pain, as well as how we can work through these changes and difficulties. It all begins with hearing and holding space for our stories. Only when we are understood as people can our pain be understood. It continues through empowering people living with pain to live well by guiding them in their search to find their own possibilities, their own meanings, their own paths. My path forward was paved with science and stories, mindfulness and movement, self-care, and compassion. What gives me such hope is that there are many paths forward. There are endless possibilities and you can help show us the way.
Learning Objectives for Chapter 1:
- Reflect on pain as a lived experience that affects our identities and lives
- Recognize how a person's story helps to better understand their pain, which leads to better treatment paths
- Practice deep listening, without listening to formulate a response or attempt to fix

Learning Objectives for the Full Series:
- Describe the complexity of pain including the lived experience of pain and the science surrounding pain.
- Learn how yoga philosophy and practices can be used as an effective and evidence-informed intervention and provide a biopsychosocial-spiritual framework in pain care.
- Practice, experience and examine the application of yoga principles and practices in pain care that demonstrate addressing all aspects of the person in pain and the complex components of pain. Examples of case studies will be provided.

Neil Pearson is a physiotherapist, yoga therapist and Clinical Assistant Professor at University of British Columbia. He is founding chair of the Canadian Physiotherapy Pain Science Division, the first PT to receive the Canadian Pain Society's Excellence in Interprofessional Pain Education award, and a previous Director with Pain BC. He has received awards from Queen’s University and the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia for his clinical work and teaching.
As a yoga therapist, Neil is certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists, faculty in four yoga therapist training programs, and has trained over 2000 practitioners in the integration of pain science, pain care and yoga as therapy through his IAYT approved Pain Care Yoga certificate courses. Neil works for the Doctors of British Columbia developing and delivering Continuing Medical Education on pain management including yoga.
His recent accomplishments include lead contributor to Pain BC’s online Pain Foundations course and their Gentle Movement and Relaxation Series, and author/coeditor of the textbook, Yoga and Science in Pain Care. His patient education book, Understand Pain Live Well Again, published in 2007, has been translated to French and (written) Mandarin.
