This course provides evidence-informed guidance on pessary use within a biopsychosocial-spiritual (BPSS) model of care for managing stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP).

  • Build confidence in client education and referrals

  • Expand your pelvic health toolkit with practical, clinically relevant knowledge

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define what vaginal pessaries are and explore the most commonly used types in Canada and the USA

  2. Summarize current definitions and research on SUI and POP, including the clinical relevance of pessary use

  3. Identify appropriate pessary candidates, including risks, contraindications, and considerations within a BPSS framework

  4. Describe vaginal products commonly used alongside pessaries (e.g. vaginal estrogen)

  5. Outline the clinical pathway to obtaining a pessary in Canada and what clients can expect during a fitting

  6. Review how clients use pessaries in daily life, including follow-up protocols

  7. Gain an introduction to setting up a pessary fitting service in your pelvic health practice

The instructors
Cara McDougall
MPT, BA Psychology

Hi! I’m Cara (she/her), a Registered Physiotherapist, Owner, and Clinical Director at Toronto Pessary Clinic. It’s truly an honor to walk alongside you in your journey to optimize your health, well-being, and function.

During my Master’s in Physical Therapy at the University of Saskatchewan in 2013, I developed a strong passion for pelvic health. The sensitive nature of this area, combined with the potential to significantly improve quality of life through physical therapy, led me to pursue extensive training in pelvic health, including pessary assessment and fitting. I have served as an Instructor and Teaching Assistant at Pelvic Health Solutions since 2016, where we train healthcare professionals in pelvic health. Additionally, in 2022, colleague Jenny Telfer-Crum and I developed and instruct a comprehensive pessary fitting course offered across North America.

After relocating to Toronto in 2016, I noticed a growing need for healthcare professionals skilled in pessary services. Patients often faced long wait times to see a trained specialist. This inspired me to open Toronto Pessary Clinic in 2018, to provide compassionate, knowledgeable, and accessible care for women seeking conservative management of pelvic conditions like prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.
