Overview:

Kieran O'Sullivan is one of the international researchers who worked intensively together with Prof. Peter O’Sullivan to develop the ‘Cognitive Functional Therapy (CFT) intervention.

CFT is an approach to the management of pain disorders that considers factors across the biopsychosocial spectrum that contribute to the development and maintenance of a pain disorder. It provides a logical framework allowing skilled clinicians to both diagnose, triage, and target management where appropriate.

CFT integrates cognitive strategies and functional rehabilitation to change provocative movement and cognitive behaviors that provoke and maintain pain.

This approach has been developed through a combination of synthesis of contemporary scientific literature and a body of original research led by Prof Peter O’Sullivan and a collaborative team of international researchers. There is emerging evidence that the CFT approach provides better clinical outcomes than the current best clinical practice in the management of non-specific chronic spinal pain.

This talk will outline the rationale of CFT, provide an overview of the available evidence and outline current challenges with this and similar approaches

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Kieran O’Sullivan graduated from University College Dublin in 1999. In 2004 he completed an MSc in Manipulative Therapy at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia. In 2008 he was awarded specialist member status by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. He joined the University of Limerick in 2005.

His research interests are musculoskeletal pain and injury, low back pain in particular. He completed his PhD on low back pain in 2012, funded by the Health Research Board. From 2016-2019, he moved to Qatar to head up a spinal pain centre at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, a FIFA- and IOC-accredited centre. He returned to UL in 2019. He is currently involved in several research projects relating to musculoskeletal pain, nationally and internationally.

Kieran is currently the national director of professional development for the ISCP (National Physiotherapy body). He was awarded the President’s Award for research excellence and impact at UL in 2021.

The instructors
Canadian Physiotherapy Association

As the vital partner for the profession, the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) leads, advocates, and inspires excellence and innovation to promote health. CPA’s goal is to provide exceptional service, valuable information and connections to the profession of physiotherapy, across Canada and around the world.

Pain Science Division

The Pain Science Division is a special interest group of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association that serves physiotherapists who have an interest in better understanding and managing pain and in connecting with likeminded clinicians, educators and researchers. The mission of the Pain Science Division is to: Foster connections and collaborations between clinicians, educators and researchers interested in pain and physiotherapy, facilitate the bidirectional translation of knowledge between pain research and clinical practice and integrate the professional interests of Canadian physiotherapists within national and international pain networks.

The PSD wants to help advance the level of pain education across the country. Pain is a multi-faceted and complex experience that warrants careful consideration and reflection by both entry-level students and experienced clinicians. Our goal is to address this issue from a multi-pronged perspective. In addition to providing clinicians with opportunities for professional development we also want to be in close communication with university-level educators and clinical specialization regulators.
